Feminism isn’t women versus men. It never has been.

It’s feminism versus the patriarchy.

The patriarchy isn’t just men. It’s the institutions and attitudes that oppress people based on their gender. Note that I say “people,” not women. The patriarchy oppresses men, too.

That’s why men’s rights activists who talk about domestic violence are getting it wrong. The alarming lack of funding that goes towards male victims of domestic violence isn’t evidence that women have taken over the world. It’s further evidence of the patriarchy’s stranglehold over all aspects of private life. Men who are abused are not doing what the patriarchy tells them to. They are not being “macho” or “tough”. They are not exercising the desired amount of control over the women in their life. And so the patriarchy punishes them for it. Not feminism.

Because the patriarchy is women, too. The patriarchy is, terrifyingly, all of us. It is difficult, impossible maybe, to not be complicit in it. 

I’m not saying that men and women have, historically, been oppressed equally. That’s certainly not true. I’m saying that now, in this moment, we’re all on the same side; or at least, we should be.
